    UPCOMING FREE WEBINAR

K12 educators may request a certificate for 1 hour CE

    We ALL Can Do It:
Empowering All Learners in the Language Classroom
Presented by Rebecca Aubrey, ACTFL Teacher of the Year (2019)

    June 17, 10AM Arizona (10AM PDT/1PM EDT)

Learning a language is no longer just about preparing for college, but about preparing all students to live in a globalized world. Thus, every student has a right to study languages and teachers need to meet their diverse needs. We typically add differentiation strategies after a lesson has been developed. This is time-consuming and disrespectful of the diversity of our students.

In this webinar, participants will learn to differentiate through backwards design by individualizing proficiency targets within a common theme, empowering students to self-direct how they show their learning, and designing a variety of learning activities.  To learn more and register for this free online event, visit:

Due to COVID-19 and as a precautionary measure in the midst of much uncertainty, COFLT and WAFLT have made the difficult decision to postpone our bi-state fall conference one year. Please save the date for October 7-9, 2021. We would like to thank the Sheraton Hotel for being flexible with our contract and look forward to creating opportunities for continued growth and inspiration in the meantime. The conference planning committee invites you to hear this video message.

I welcome you to reach out to me directly at any time at cofltoregon@gmail.com. I hope you are safe and well, that you are continuing to take care of yourself and others.

A message from our friends at Michigan State University:

As we all look for guidance on transitioning language courses online for summer and possibly the next academic year, I wanted to share a professional development opportunity available through the Center for Language Teaching advancement (CeLTA) and the English Language Center (ELC) at Michigan State University.

Introduction to Online Language Teaching is a fully online, six-week course designed for experienced classroom instructors who want to make the transition to teaching languages online. The course is led by a master instructor with extensive online teaching experience. While each participant will bring their own pedagogical background, the course presupposes a task-based, proficiency-oriented view of language instruction. Course participants will gain an understanding of key criteria and conceptual frameworks used to describe online pedagogy, and will develop expertise in the areas of course quality and design, accessibility, and media. We are offering two sessions of this course this summer:

    Summer Session 1: May 18th - June 26th

    Summer Session 2: July 6th - August 14th

The online nature of the course exposes participants to all of the affordances and constraints of an online environment for language teaching and learning, allowing them to experience a student’s perspective firsthand. This includes engaging in a variety of tasks and discussions, which are meant to be a non-comprehensive sampling of the possibilities of online learning. Participants will receive feedback from the instructor and, by the end of the course, will have developed a principled plan for developing an online course at their own institution. For more information and instructions on how to sign up, please visit the course website at olt.cal.msu.edu.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly if you have any questions.

Professor Thierry Durand at Linfield College attended our Spring Workshops and won some free money to take share pastries with colleagues and do some collaborating in the process.  Here's what he had to say:

"Le premier café de français de l’année c’est très bien passé, c’est dommage que tu n’ai pas pu venir !"
